Mac App Review – Caffeinated
By macstarter | January 13th, 2012 | Category: Review | No Comments »I’ve been a Google Reader fan for years. For those of you who don’t know what that is, Google Reader lets you keep up with RSS feeds. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s basically a way for you to keep up with your favourite websites and any new articles / posts that might have appeared since you last visited the site. (in fact Macstarter has its own RSS feed that you can subscribe to).
I came across a program called Caffeinated today. It’s basically a RSS reader that lets you plug-in your Google account, and it picks up all your RSS feeds and presents them to you in what I can only describe as one of the most beautiful interfaces I have ever seen.
Now, before I go any further, I have to say that I have tried just about every RSS reader app under the sun. I’ve tried online services and basically settled into reading my feeds on Google Reader itself. Not that there’s anything wrong with Google’s own reader service…. it’s just a little bland.
Enter Caffeinated. Made by GeekyGoodness, this App just might have made my top 5 Apps of 2012 already! Sign in with your Google account and it will seamlessly pick up your feeds. Your feeds are listed on the left. Your unread article is in the column to the right. Unread articles are in bold. Up to this point, I was impressed, but not much. That is, until I clicked on an article. The way that Caffeinated presented me with a webpage was just beautiful. I mean stunningly beautiful. Rather than just showing you a bland text version of the article, you get a superb looking retro style book view. Take this view from Macstarter.
I almost wish Macstarter looked like this for real! By the way, the screenshot above is the full screen view of this App. I’m a great fan of full screen Apps. I think they are great to get rid of distraction. As of yet, I’ve seen no App do full screen this stylishly. Let’s just say, it’s been a very long since I downloaded an App and then just sat there with my jaw hanging open. It’s got Growl support, which means you’re alerted to new posts as they are published. Oh, and the software is in Beta stage by the way….. If you’re into RSS feeds (and if you’re not, why not?), go and grab a copy right now.
