Restore Windows in Lion

Restore Windows in Lion

One of the features in Lion that can get me a little hot under the collar is the Restore Windows feature. You’ll see this happening with certain programs (such as Preview). Now, let’s say you’ve opened up two PDF’s to read them. You then quit Preview. Later on, you open up a third PDF file to read it, and low and behold, the previous two PDF’s open up as well! In some situations this is a good thing. In other situations it can really get [...]

Re-downloading from the Mac App Store

Re-downloading from the Mac App Store

I love the Mac App Store. I do with there were more big names there, but the fact that I can buy a new computer and re-download all my Apps from one convenient place is a winner. There’s just nothing else like it. Add to that the fact that your actual operating system sits in your App Store “purchases” sections, it’s just brilliant. But what happens if you want to download, say, Lion all over again? Now why would you need to do that? Well, [...]

Software Essentials pt I

Software Essentials pt I

We ran a series of articles when Macstarter had just hatched, outlining what software you could substitute for more expensive counterparts. That being a while back, I thought it would be a good time to delve into that subject again. Software is essentially what makes a computer your own. You should install the software you need, but not be afraid to try new things either. You won’t know what’s going to help you until you’ve had a chance to use it. For this first part [...]

Widgets cont….

Yesterday I talked a little about Yahoo Widgets. As with any tool  on your Mac, overloading your desktop with score widgets, post-its, webcam trackers and weather widgets will slow you, the computer (and possibly the entire internet!). The key is to use the widgets to help you. My favourite widget is the original Yahoo Weather widget. Like all good meteorologists, its weather predictions are sometimes off, but to have the 5 day weather sitting on my desktop has help a great deal in the past. [...]

Widgets

I’ve talked about Dashboard before, and some people swear by it, and leave themselves post-it notes, check their shares and stocks, book airline tickets and a million other things simply by pressing their Dashboard key on the keyboard (f4 on modern Mac, f12 on older Macs). I have to admit though, having widgets take over your screen doesn’t fit into my way of working. Believe it or not, Apple didn’t invent the Widget. Before Apple brought us Dashboard, I was already a fan of Konfabulator [...]

App Store tip – Translate Free

Ever since the Mac App Store opened up, I have found myself browsing the programs there from time to time, just like I love to do on my phone. So here’s an absolute gem in the Free Apps section. It’s aptly called Translator Free, and it solves a problem that I have with using online translators, which is the switching back and forth between a document, Google Translate, back to the document and so on. This program lives on your menubar, and clicking on the [...]

Christmas Presents – Software pt II

In the last article, we talked about what software you could buy a Mac user. It was focussed only on Apple Software, so in this article we can go a little further afield with our choices. Microsoft Office 2011 is a very good buy for anyone you know with a Mac who is studying. I switched over to it a few months ago, and can’t see myself using the older version anymore. Macs were always lagging behind their Windows counterparts

Christmas presents – Software pt I

When it comes to software for a mac, your choices are huge. Gone are the days where you would struggle to find programs for your Mac that weren’t compatible with any other computer. But what do you get someone who already had the good taste to go out and buy themselves a Mac in the first place? If you want to keep it simple

Comic Sans anyone?

Type it out I got asked a question today about why Macs have such boring fonts. In my opinion they aren’t all that boring, but this was asked by a teenager looking to jazz up their page a little. The good news is that not only is it easy to get new fonts, but actually fun as well! What to do: Firstly, go to www.dafont.com and find a font you want to download. There are literally thousands of fonts to choose from, organised into categories. [...]

Time for a Spring Clean II

Uninstall with style! In the last article we were talking about how simple it was to uninstall programs on a Mac. The only problem with deleting Programs directly to the Trash Can is that little files get left behind. Although in itself this doesn’t cause much hassle, the clutter can be avoided. AppCleaner Visit this website and download an application called AppCleaner. Install this program as you normally would and then start it. You have two ways of removing programs from your computer. When you [...]
